About Grove Park
The place we call home.
Our Story: Strength In Community
1. Once a thriving center for Black families and businesses on Atlanta’s westside, Grove Park enjoyed its economic and cultural splendor during the 1960s and into the 1970s. Thriving schools and Black-owned businesses beautifully grew, spurred by its location along a bustling highway corridor.
2. Sadly, decades of disinvestment followed. The closure of public housing developments and the mortgage fraud crisis of 2008 continued to take a toll on the community and its residents. A lack of critical amenities in a deteriorated commercial corridor, and a shortage of affordable housing options left residents vulnerable. The population decreased, and the area saw a decline in property conditions and the local economy. Even today, Grove Park has no supermarket, no bank, no pharmacy, and few local restaurants.
3. But with organizations, businesses, and residents ready to invest in the community again, Grove Park is poised to make a comeback. The Grove Park Foundation is at the forefront of the neighborhood’s resurgence, empowering the people of Grove Park to partner with programs, resources, and stakeholders to build a healthy, equitable, and economically vibrant community. Working together, we can realize a new, stronger, prosperous Grove Park.

Community Challenges to Health
In 2018, the Grove Park Foundation commissioned a Community Health Assessment that found huge concerns around access to healthy food. The neighborhood lacks grocery stores and easy access to fresh fruits and vegetables. Many of the top health concerns in the community are related to diet: hypertension, diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Census data backs up that rates of these diseases are higher in Grove Park than in other areas. This begs the question, What can we do to build a healthier neighborhood? One answer: we can leverage community assets to build a produce prescription program in Grove Park.
